Stand in the place where you live

September 24, 2013 by Cody Willard

If you are confused, check with the sun
Carry a compass to help you along
Your feet are going to be on the ground
Your head is there to move you around

So stand in the place where you live
Now face north
Think about direction
Wonder why you haven’t before – REM, Stand (1989)

Fascinating and very insightful additional commentary on the importance of platforms from my friend, TWC subscriber and technologist, Travis Leonard whom you can find on Twitter at @Tminus5.

Also, if you have an iPhone or an iPad and haven’t downloaded the Scutify app, please click here (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/scutify/id673974489) and check it out and let me know what you think of it. And if you have downloaded it, please click through to the link on your iPhone or open it in iTunes to rate it and review it. We’ve just cracked the 20 in the Apple App Store Finance Category and the reviews we have so far are terrific. Thanks in advance!

Anyway, Travis writes:

“I’d point out that “The Google Docs platform” is no more – it’s just a feature of Google Drive.

But that just points out just how much these platforms can grown and evolve to the point they one subsumes another.  Look at the new beta version of Google Maps (on the list) and how much it is beginning to look like a no-installation required version of Google Earth (not on the list).

With each evolution of these platforms you can end up with something at in just a few years does 10x what the previous versions did, and isn’t even recognizable as its former self.

To be successful, the ecosystem needs to be stable, while the individual platforms remain fluid.  Stable ecosystem with stable platforms – then you start to look too much like Microsoft’s challenges.  Not a good place to be.”
