Subscriber comment: Nice article today on $HLF and $VRX. I think $HLF is a fascinating story. Am I reading correctly that Icahn now owns about 24% of the stock in $HLF? That can’t be healthy, and it sure gives the appearance that he has gotten himself into a pissing contest with Ackman. Reminds me a bit of what he did with $CHK, buying a ton at about $19/share, and then doubling down as the stock dropped precipitously.
Cody’s response: Yes, Icahn owns nearly 25% of $HLF.
Another subscriber follow-up comment: Besides some good humor, this is one reason I like it here: “It’s possible that Ackman’s going to have to reverse his short positioning in HLF as his investors demand money out of his hedge fund. That might give shorts a great chance to build their positions at a higher level in coming weeks.” This is a piece to my puzzle when I tranche in for a bit. Grazi Cody.
Subscriber comment: Cody, your morning missive, Long Patience but Still Short Valeant and Herbalife, was one of the most educational and insightful I’ve read. Of course, I loved the Jesse Livermore quotes, so apropos. But it was the part about doing your own research and not buying or selling off of others’ analysis or recommends that resonated most with me. It became so clear that the heart of your success is due to your own strong research abilities and not being swayed by your peers. Thanks for the insight, it will continue to help strengthen my resolve to tune out the noise. Rock on, dude!
