@hc2002-: since apple has broken above all its trend lines its a clear breakout. I see no reason why it NEEDS to retest low 400’s at this point. It could be targeting 515 next. When / if we see new phone design hardware and software then the market will react accordingly to that and or if new products.
eryba1
August 8, 2013 – 7:31 am
For now we are nicely oversold on the oscillator we can always go lower so a down trend is in place. However most of codys stocks are acting resilient now in Cien, aapl,FB,lnkd, goog, amzn.

Yo, is this a good time to buy into fslr? It’s been tanking and the explanation is “big contract didn’t get signed yet”. The story is good long-term, but what about today? Is it a buy?

hc2002
August 8, 2013 – 10:32 am
@eryba1: hope you are right. This is where I don’t mind being wrong at all. I do keep some dry powder just in case aapl breaks down
eryba1
August 8, 2013 – 10:34 am
@hc2002: yes but like I said I am possibly looking to add I want to see how each stock is behaving = more apt for a decline it seems as we get further oversold which is fine that why we trimmed higher
eryba1
August 8, 2013 – 10:36 am
a few Technical Analysts = TA are looking for S&P 1680 to be tested first before this pullback is complete. Lets watch and see
eryba1
August 8, 2013 – 10:51 am
@hc2002: FYI- even though some TA are looking for S&P 1680 to be touched does not mean it will happen nor does it mean for individual names they are not going to outperform or need to retreat because the S&p is or has done so. Some stocks like have already corrected or are in stronger hands now
hc2002
August 8, 2013 – 10:56 am
@eryba1: thanks. Fully understand the limit of TA. It’s a guide not a fortune teller. Otherwise it would be too easy.

SLV calls were a day early but nicely in the green now and I’m glad I jumped back in on GDX…I still doubt the Fed will slow the printing press until after mid term elections
eryba1
August 8, 2013 – 11:46 am
@msamuels2000: the gdx is volatile as we have all seen recently topping out at 28.66 and then falling to 23.9.
eryba1
August 8, 2013 – 12:42 pm
lets see if the GLD holds at these or higher levels as volume looks good mid day and we need follow through to confirm the potential break above its 50 day moving avg
msamuels2000
August 8, 2013 – 2:20 pm
with Silver still trailing historical ratio to Gold price, SLV could really take off if GLD breaks out

August 8, 2013 – 2:34 pm
@msamuels2000: all metal related stocks are breaking to the upside from FCX to VALE to the copper index JJC so SLV GLD and GDX are all joining suit. Volume is increasing in all but for the GLD SLV and GDX will need to see follow through to confirm GDX up 8% on heavy vol so far

OUTR puts for October are looking like a loser. Big drop after July earnings report, but it’s been recovering. No more ERs till after expiration. Is it time to dump that one and look further out?
msamuels2000
August 8, 2013 – 4:23 pm
@eryba1: I’ve had an itchy trigger finger since the $50s so patience has served well so far. I guess when these cars move from garage art to practical use and the quality problems start mounting we will have our signal
eryba1
August 8, 2013 – 4:46 pm
@msamuels2000: I would much rather buy a good stock and growth then wait for issues to show up which to date nothing of significance has. R U waiting for a toyota like moment recalls galore?
msamuels2000
August 8, 2013 – 9:00 pm
@eryba1: I just think they can’t live up to the valuation unless their cars can be practically used. To date the buyers are basically collectors. Quality challenges are inevitable if/when they start to scale.

Not sure if you heard of the FOX report on Apple-Board concerned at pace of innovation w/ Cook. I am nervous and happy if this is true. Now I think the next IPhone is the “Same as it Ever Was” 5S exactly the same. and IWatch next year. If true I think it is a mistake.
JeffDaniel
August 8, 2013 – 11:01 pm
I have owned Apple since 2002 and have added since 2010. Lesson learned, sell along the way. I own every product and buy every new product. Also own Google/Amazon. It is hard for me to believe that Apple’s best days might be behind. I still think it can hit $580 + by yearend. But could be very wrong.
hc2002
August 8, 2013 – 11:58 pm
@JeffDaniel: Reading the tea leaves on Apple, I think they went through some turbulences after Jobs passing. Witness the high level exec changes. Seem like Cook’s in control throughout. Fox’s report is really hard to parse, no context, no details. I’d be surprised that innovation does not come up during board meetings. I’m happy that the board is doing its job.

Apple dropping on rumors that new products aren’t all that?
eryba1
August 9, 2013 – 11:34 am
@jahmon: i wouldnt think that until we see them its had a great move up its bound to pullback . 395 to 470 a near 20% advance so a pullback when the markers are in a downtrend correctioon is not out of the quest its healthy I would buy bk what i sold near 470 at 345 range
msamuels2000

Cody MIA after FIO debacle
hc2002
August 9, 2013 – 1:22 pm
Hmm, somehow I read Cody’s FIO call differently. When he said that it could go up or down 10%, I paid more attention to down 10% and got some protection there. Cramer always said that during earning season, home gamers should not try to gamble with the outcomes, instead, listen to the conf calls and learn what the companies are doing. I think that’s a very prudent advice, unless you understand the gamble nature of the bet and can properly rationalize the risks.
jahmon
August 9, 2013 – 1:25 pm
Makes sense. Not sure why Cody decided to make those 4 earnings gambles recently…doesn’t follow the pattern that I’ve seen him follow over the last 10 months or so that I’ve been here…
jahmon
August 9, 2013 – 1:26 pm
He lost 3 out of 4
eryba1
August 9, 2013 – 1:27 pm
@jahmon: he has made a few small wages on earnings of stocks not recently in the portfolio. small risk small loss / reward. Not sure at this point why anyone is looking for home runs on earnings reports for new names vs the great results we have had with names in the portfolio to date.

August 9, 2013 – 2:11 pm
@eryba1: Yep, that’s a really good sign for FB. It held the 38 level pretty well. One thing I noticed recently was that I started clicking on quite a few of FB recommended articles in my newsfeed. I’ve been using My Yahoo as a news aggregator for the last 10 years. FB starts looking like a good replacement, it knows what I like to read.

Would like to hear Cody’s thoughts on the Board of Directors pressuring Tim Cook to hurry up and innovate and concern over the pipeline. Could this spell a disastrous fall/winter for Apple?
George Mtz
August 10, 2013 – 12:49 pm
Yes I would like to, I think Apple is making a nice come back and it’s important to know Cody’s oppinion!
JeffDaniel
August 10, 2013 – 2:17 pm
@George Mtz: The concerning part of the Fox story is that the board is concerned about the pipeline. The BOD sees products-6-18 months before launch. If true then that is ver concerning.
JeffDaniel
August 10, 2013 – 2:20 pm
Cody, Regarding the Fox story on the BOD of Apple being deeply concerned about Tim Cook’s rate of innovation and what is in the pipeline. The phrase do something ASAP as reported is the same phrase that Hedge Fund David Tepper said in May. He stated that they need to do something now and that if in the Fall the new products are not good he would not want to be holding Apple. Do you see stories like this as the BOD firing a warning shot at Tim Cook to bring in products now? Apple does need a larger screen phone, better advertising of iCloud, ITunes and the rest of the eco systems.
eryba1
August 11, 2013 – 1:51 pm
@JeffDaniel: as much as the BOD Wants new products to obviously HELP the stock and the company we ALL want that. However asking to expedite things does not help the matter at all. The reason we diversify is not to have too much riding on one investment, each stock develops on its one time and pace not on our wishes and hopes. As much as we all want the stock to gain momentum again (even though lately it has done quite well 390-470 move) we cant FORCE things to happen thats when U get in trouble. The BOD and I am sure EVERY investor wants new products, larger screen, WAY longer batter life, new features etc we need to let the company get it right before releasing any product. It has acted very well of recent so lets see what the rest of 2013 brings when company managemnt did say to potent

The days to cover ratio is not excessaive, however, as the $3 stock has been trading about 25 million shares daily recently.

Good Afternoon Cody, I would like to see your latest positions just to get an idea of what you consider triming as well as a medium long buy opportunity to get in this week?
ebdavids
August 13, 2013 – 12:23 pm
@Cody: for a response today or in tomorrow’s Q&A: note this article by a teen in Mashable: http://mashable.com/2013/08/11/teens-facebook/. Do you believe there is any viability in this argument that with teens losing interest now, that will dig into young adults ( the same people) adopting Facebook in a couple of years –an important audience segment? And does this argument differ between the United States and important FB growth countries in the rest of the world?
eryba1
August 13, 2013 – 12:55 pm
@ebdavids: interesting read. While there will always be new apps programs etc like the described snapchat I think “liked” products arent a nuisance since I liked them in the first place and if I no longer like it I can unlike it and not have it in my news feed. I also get the idea not wanting to be friend MOM or DAD on my FB acct thats very true teens want their privacy. Not sure parents are PUSHING their teens to befriend their kids on FB or else which is the gist of the article. I would clearly understand if my daughter does not befriend me when she is 13 -18 or so. But as we mature and understand more FB is really a fun convenient and super efficient to have friends and fam see what we are interested to share with them, from pictures videos of activities outings and things of interest
eryba1
August 13, 2013 – 1:03 pm
@ebdavids: Plus FB now has 1.2+ Billion users who wont just shut down. It may take time for teens to come onto FB at some point but with other older friends and Fam on FB at some point teens will / could open a FB acct to share and keep in touch with moments in their lives they want to share with others as they grow

Apple up big because of Icahn investment. Tim Cook has really lost control of this great company. This along with the BOD comments and Larry Ellison point to Tim Cook being completely over his head. As a share holder I am very happy to see the stock up but believe Larry Ellison is probably right. He is the one who convinced Steve Jobs to come back to Apple and was his best friend. Tim Cook has made Apple look very weak.

@JeffDaniel: the next set of products will be the tell and the markets / consumer reaction to them Apple TV, watch, new phones etc.

Cody, What do you think of Larry Ellison’s comments on Apple along with the Fox BOD rumors. I think Larry is probably right.

August 13, 2013 – 3:02 pm
@eryba1: I hope we see an Apple TV and watch this year. My gut tells me Cook is too timid to release anything that might not be a blockbuster. They could have pre paid for alll the content needed 2 years ago for Apple TV. Share buybacks are great to reduce float but would rather see it used to develop the next great product. I still see Tim Cook out as CEO within 1 year. The Larry Ellison comments combined with the Fox BOD rumor are telling. Ellison is a major reason Apple survived and thrived.

I don’t see FIO as well and there was never a sell trade alert…I guess because they just evaporated with the big FIO earnings miss.

@JeffDaniel: forget what others say let the new LINE of products under tim cook and especially new categories be our tell along with stocks reaction to them. Tim looks very docile and other but we do not know him. These are his products with his handwriting all over it. Lets see what becomes of them

I don’t know — is it just me, or do others share the feeling that even if Apple (Cook) comes out with a new product like Apple TV, or an Apple watch or, as Cody and others put it, something else wearable,, the days of an Apple anouncement of ANYTHING being a huge market mover are gone. There’s been so much discussion, so many pre-announcemnts (and mini-introductions ) by others of these things that the “surprise” and “wow, Apple is just SO different and cool” factor for them is long gone. True, some of these products may place then well in the long-term Revolution — but in the short or mid-term, procut announcemnts (I think) will have neither major earnings impact nor stock-moving mojo. Again, maybe it’s me … but let’s just see what happens when the 5S and cheaper models —

@eryba1: You’re right, for sure. But i think a lot of APPL’s allure before was its uniqueness and coolness, and the stock plunge and lassitude on the part of Cook, and aggressiveness and, frankly, success, of the competition (in phones, especially, and maybe tablets) has put a damper on any short-term rise in the stock due to ANY product innovation. Would love to be proven wrong (and I may be!) Cook leaving the company? Now THAT would have an effect! (Rightly or wrongly.)

Tim Cook has really hurt the Apple brand in my opinion. He is almost combative in dealing with Analysis “Our phone is the right size”, watch him in All Things D 11. He is combative. The Larry Ellison comments are telling. Now Carl Ichan buying a $1B worth of stock will put more pressure on Tim Cook. I don’t think the BOD will put up with another year of nothing.

August 13, 2013 – 3:59 pm
@ebdavids: Looking at the positive side, I’d say it’s healthier. As long as TC can turn out solid (not wowing) products, I see it as a huge earning machine and I can sleep at night knowing that it’s making a ton of money. If they do come out with some great products, that’s the icing on top.
vmontes
August 13, 2013 – 4:01 pm
Remember they can be making a ton of cash but their stock can decrease as it did recently, cash is not everything and for some companies it’s nothing
JeffDaniel
August 13, 2013 – 4:04 pm
@eryba1: I agree. Retinal dsiplay on a Macbook Pro 13 inch is not innovation. I also don’t think the revamped ITunes is very good either. The BOD comments rumor, Larry Ellison and now Carl Ichan personally calling Tim Cook are all a shot across the bow of Tim Cook or a get off your *** and do something. Google David Teppers comments from May. He also owned a $1B chunk but sold 35% and now has an average price of $475. Tim Cook has weaken a great company and now is leaving it’s destiny up to others. Carl Icahn looks for mismanaged companies and Apple might be one.

AAPL clearly had some rough patches in the past year. It could be Tim Cook’s fault, it could be something else. I don’t have enough insight into their internal workings in order to make an informed decision. However, I did email Tim Cook about treating shareholders as partners and share more information. I was just doing what I can, no matter how small it is to HELP a great company.

August 13, 2013 – 4:18 pm
BTW. I do remember what MSFT which has been making a ton of money has done in the past decade to its shareholders. That you will just have to apply our own judgements on the CEOs in question. I think Tim Cook is different than Steve Ballmer. Not saying Tim Cook is a saint and did not make mistakes. But he’s righting the ship IMHO.

Cody made had a good quote a while back that Tim Cook enjoys the view from planes that others built. Apple could easily go the way of Microsoft and that is why it is attracting activist investors like Icahn and Einhorn. The see an undervalued company The fact that Apple has not increased the size of their phone, has only 1 phone and they are essentially a phone company is insane. Listen to the past 3 conference calls and All Things D 11, there is contempt for Cook. And if the BOD is getting nervous that he is falling behind then they will get rid of him. Larry Ellison obviously does not think highly of him either. Sad to see activist investors getting involved at Apple, great for near term stock action but they pounce on weakness.

My biggest problem with aapl even on its way up from 500-700 was arrogance… The products ecosystem and just about everything else about the products they have are well thought up well made and user friendly…. The part that i didnt like to see was going to a concert and seeing a big ol tab/phone that aapl didnt sell… To me its capitalizing on addressable markets…. Making an iphone 5 without ret display iphone5b as in basic a little cheaper to appeal to more people…. Getting people on the ecosystem and as they make money they upgrade and stay on etc…. Just because u make a variety of phones to serve more people doesnt tarnish your brand it moves units in my eyes… Sure enough everyone who could make a phone caught up… Now their forced to innovate to keep their edge and get mor
