@rkumar: i think ppl underestimate the privacy factor with the fingerprint tech… Theres still too much emotion around aapl crazy sell the news reaction over 10% in a few days…. Nevertheless expectations r low… The used to launch one phone in two colors now instead of a margin crunch from ppl buying the 5 they have the mid end and high end.. The other thing is their already launching in china theres a lot of upside to the numbers

OK, so now we wait for Cody to assess the Fairfax buyout offer (or LOI to do so) on BBRY to see whether he believes it will hold and/or WE should hold onto puts — at least through the upcoming ER. He’s holding puts from $11 to $14 expiring October, LOI amounts to $9/share. Cody? (I know he’s not on right now.)

Facebook upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Citigroup Citigroup upgraded Facebook shares to Buy after speaking with advertisers and agencies and raised its price target for the stock to $55 from $32. Citi believes the ad growth Facebook experienced in Q2 is sustainable and sees the introduction of video ads as one of the company’s growth opportunities. Shares of Facebook closed yesterday down 30c to $47.19.

@Johan: Taking profits should feel great and have extra cash on hand. Even if a stock continues to rise U have some on and some off better risk reward. If you sell it continues to perform for U . If it pulls back U can look to get back in at lower prices.

@Olivepetunia: YUM has been in a tight range the past year 65-75. The rest look good LNN finally above that 70ish bottom that held and today 85+. Nice top 5 portfolio. I see many of U guys have some of the BEST stocks out there from codys picks and thus one would deduct that you may be at year hi’s in your portfolios value?

eryba1 I have been following INFN since a couple of years ago and as CIEN, I really think this is the right moment to buy. Infinera has the best technology for long haul 100G infrastructure, they focused the last two years in building their technology for the demand of 100G and higher and I think they are getting traction… Very interesting company to look for when ou are thinking on the increasing capex by the ISP.

I like this analogy a FULLY invested portfolio is like a Fully packed car on a road trip. If you dont sell some and have cash to buy its like running the gas tank on empty. U need cash in hand and lighten up the load on the way up to be able to refuel on the pullbacks by trimming.

@doug.sekula: U would have made the big $$ either way as even if U trimmed Fb at 45-50 U could have had free cahs to buy example Xone decline to 49-50 FSLR decline 37-38, Cien decline 26 to 24.5, aaple decline 510 to 450, goog 925 to 850. Eitherway time to trim talk is here for FB and on CUE an e-mail alert from cody to us all that he’s trimming FB today

@doug.sekula: NEVER EVER BE AFRAID U missed!!! Thats why we trim on way up. WHen U have cash on hand other opportunities become clear to you. If U R fully invested U cant think of adding FSLR on decline, AAPL on pullback to 450-460 XONE on decline to 48, cien pullback to 24.5. U cant because U R all in all the time. selling some on way up is doubly rewarding. U take GREAT profits, let the stock continue to ride higehr and benefit from continued upside and U have fresh cash to reinvest in other stocks that have pulled back

FSLR didnt own for a while since 50’s. So a free cash frees up your mind to look for investments elsewhere while other positions continue hopefully to perform

I think GDX is a good buy here along with GLD, As i added at these levels myself after trimming GLD near 137. But thats what I am doing for my portfolio. I trimmed FB, Cien, LNKD and had cash to reinvest and made buys in DGX, XONE, FSLR. If I didnt make those trims I would be running on EMPTY on gas for my fully loaded CAR and needed cash to refuel.

Sold all of FB and CIEN. Bought back FB small tranche at $43. Bought back some CIEN today. I hear you on the strategy. Remember a while back we were all ready for the markets to pull back big? I wanted to lock in my profits.

@jahmon: sure pullback but its never a perfect scenario we sell all we get the pullback we imagines! thus buy and sell in tranches best over time. I trimmed those same names and others and we did get cien pullback 26 to 24.5 = 6% FB not much of a pullback barely 1-2 days 45 to 43 then spike higher last friday to 47 and today near 50

Cody, any eye on Voxeljet IPO? Sounds like similar market as XONE. Its printers use powder binding technology, which involves chemical binding agents used to bind together the material being printed. ExOne uses a similar technology. Voxeljet’s printers have several sand and plastics capabilities. It’s currently developing new material sets, including additional sands, PMMA-based plastics (think Plexiglas), ceramics, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, wood powder, and cement.

@jahmon: Will take a look at the Voxe IPO. I would stick with the IEFs you got. Less capital at risk, but a bit higher risk of losing your entire exposure because of the lower strike price you bought.

Did we miss selling the peak of the AAPL 500’s? I sold a little at the peak and sold about 1/3 at the peak of the GDX and missed the peak of the BBRY’s. Gotta be better about taking profits. Cody seems to let his ride quite a bit. Mix of art and science I understand.

@jahmon: end of month selling, just as managers want to show they own MORE of the winners they also dont want to show they own any badly performing stocks. Thus the selling keeps on going until the sellers are done
